Since marijuana is illegal there have been no long term studies. As a result, it is impossible to say with any certainty. Marijuana in the short term seems much less dangerous than alcohol. However, it is a weak hallucinogen so over the long term it is possible it may do damage to your brain chemistry.
NORML is a group that wants to make it legal. They are not an organization of doctors or scientists so they are basically trying to get it legalized, not determine whether or not it is safe.

Actually, it is less physically harmful depending on how it is taken. Smoking obviously can harm your throat and lungs due to scorching from inhaling and make you more prone to infection and disease. However, inhaling Marijuana is still less harmful and smoking cigarettes due to the nasty chemicals and additives and harsher nature of tobacco. Also, marijuana does not harm your kidneys or any other organ for that matter.
The harmfulness of marijuana is that it deprives you of all desire to do anything and eat and be a vegetable. In the long run, this is pretty bad. Also, the physical high can be as disorienting as alcohol intoxication. So even if it were legalized, the same driving prohibitions would still apply.
As for killing brain cells, there is still no definitive study showing this actually happens. Alcohol however has been proven to permanently damage the brain. Ever seen the Alcoholic Shuffle? It is a symptom of permanent alcohol damage.

Hell yeah, it is! Alcohol is the devil, compared to pot. I don't see any stoners becoming violent or destructive, annoying, etc.... as drunk people get. Not to mention the fact that Marijuana DOES have many medicinal properties, that have been scientifically proven! (even tho, the government knows that and STILL refuses to accept it (what more proof do they want?) and would rather keep it illegal to make more money off the fines people have to pay than to legalize it) Plus, if the government cared so much about our health in the United States, they'd make smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol illegal too, cause they harm you as they think pot does too.
The worst thing a stoner would do is probably rob a Frito Lay truck cause he/she has the munchies, hehe....
Happy 4:20 everyone! ===\_/

It is a fact that the burned byproduct of any kind of plant (tobacco, marijuana) is carcinogenic (cancer causing). This extends into anything that is being burned like the charcoal bricks you use in a BBQ grill or the wood in a fire place. However, with tobacco and pot you are drawing this burned carcinogens byproduct into your lungs directly which is much more dangerous. So the dangers of smoking pot is that you can get lung cancer on top of its side effects which can be brain damaging if your are a chronic pot user. My past answers concerning pot have not been well received by those who are convinced that pot is totally safe and I get a lot of thumbs down. However, in my opinion I do think pot is safer than alcohol. I believe that alcohol if abused can be one of the most dangerous and addictive drugs out there. Booze real danger is that it is legal and therefore that makes it right for us to abuse it and that is where its real danger lies. This is why I strongly feel pot should never be legalized, because we would have another abused legal drug. We humans can not be trusted to have our lives under control.
Edit update: For those of you that do believe that pot does not cause brain damage then I suggest you go to a medical web site and read what people educated in health have to say, not skewed web sites like normal that will say what you want to hear.

It depends how much is consumed per day:
Up to 3 glasses of wine daily has been shown in various studies to be very healthy for reducing cholesterol and prolonging life expectancy. There is no established amount of weed that has been shown to be beneficial to a healthy body.
More than 3 glasses of wine, alcohol becomes bad for your body, especially your liver, stomach and heart. Alcohol is also harmful in how it impacts the brain and decision making skills, where pot is not like this. It takes an insane amount of dope to actually become harmful to your body, more than what a typical heavy smoker would choose to smoke daily.

I would say definitely yes. Alcohol kills brain cells, causing liver damage and when is the last time you heard about someone killed by a "pot smoker"?. Also, in some states, marijuana is actually prescribed by doctors to treat cancer and glaucoma.

Supposedly marijuana isn't physically addictive, hower it is psychologically addictive. Also, factor in that you are getting it from a criminal. If they don't care if they are breaking the law by selling illegal drugs, do you really think they care if the drug is laced with something deadly. It's not exactly federally inspected now, is it?
