Over 20 years ago, we used a stucco pre-mix solution on the walls in our hallway, applying it with a sponge to give it a textured appearance. Now we want to get rid of it and make the walls smooth again. Would it be easier to sand the walls down -- and if so, is there a tool that can be used to do this easily? -- or plaster over the stucco? Any suggestions are helpful.

Electric sander. It will be messy and that dust will be all over your home.

Sometimes you can scrape it off with a scraper.
Not sure you can sand-it down because it's usually a mix of plaster and sand.
If you can't scrape it off, you may have to re-drywall it.

Got a scraper?! I would be tempted to gyproc right over it but windows and door jamb's become an issue. Dirty ,labour intensive job, good luck.
