It is one of the best workouts and it gets to more muscles that running does - it does not put as much stress on the body and gives the same - actually a more intense workout.. bonus is that it does not feel like it. :o) which works for me.. Running is not good for the knees - even walking is better many believe - same results.

It can be.- it's all about the level of intensity. The eliptical machine is the 2nd best simulation of running,(treadmill being the first), with the added benefit of being much lower impact than running. So, if you have knee, back, or ankle issues or are recovering from injury, the eliptical is awesome and will keep you fit. Even if you're someone who can't get out to run, is too heavy or out of shape to run, or just hates running, the eliptical is an excellent choice. The one thing you gotta remember is that it's all about the intensity. If you hop on there and cruise on level 2 for hours you're not doing yourself any favors- in fact, you're wasting your time. If you're not huffing and puffing like you would if you were running, you're not on a high enough level! So, yes, the eliptical can be as effective as running, so long as you increase the level enough to give yourself an equally challenging workout.

Actually better than running because there is less impact on the body and joints. I'm an everyday runner so I would know. I choose to run because I love it, but when I take a day off from running I usually do low impact cardio. I prefer the stationary bike, but that's just me. A runner for life.
