I try to find products that include saffron as part of its seasoning ingredients. Often the Goya products such as Sazon will have this and it will color rice dishes nicely. Otherwise if paprika won't work then I will use saffron. It only takes a pinch to give food that beautiful golden color.

yes, just because some recipes can't be made right without it.

you don't need much, if you overdo it it tends to have a medicinal taste.

pay a little extra for the better stuff, like the superior grade Spanish, some cheaper stuff like Mexican saffron is actually safflower, gives a yellow color without the saffron flavor.

yes, with my rice dishes. Mahatma has a rice that already comes with the saffron in it. It comes in small amounts, but it is less expensive than buying saffron. when I really need it, i get it from my mom. she always has some.

Absolutly, a little goes a long way and you can't get a similar flavor from any substitutions. Try it with Risotto or orzo.
