hey, i went to a bday party for my friend down in chula vista, Ca. and the cake was an ube cake...the icing wasnt the regular vanilla,it tasted different but the entire cake was sooo good! Can anyone tell me how to make one? I know theyre of purple yams but all I can find is the purple ube powder. thanks!

ube cake is basically a chiffon cake with violet food coloring in it. use the powdered food color, as the liquid unstabilize the cake mixture. then make about 3 cakes. fill the cake with a filling of your choice. then coat the stacked cakes with softened ube ice cream. then put in a blender the 3rd cake and make into a crumb, which you then cover the cake up. thus, ube cake have that felty look from the crumbs. voila! ube cake! i think at first ube cake was made from real ube, but i think it made it heavy so they just omitted the ube from the cake and use food coloring instead.

it is a species of Yam, a tuberous root vegetable like potatoes.. Ube (or ubi) is the Filipino word for this purple yam. It contains pigments that gives its violet color.

In the Philippines, ube is cooked with sugar and eaten as a sweetened dessert or jam.. also used as a flavor in cakes and ice creams, all are purple in color. really delicious..

I have never heard of this before, but you have made me curious so I checked out my very favorite website: www.recipezaar.com and the only thing I found was a recipe for Ube Cupcakes... I'm gonna keep looking though and will add any recipes I come accross!

Ranch 99 Asian Market, has all the ingredients you will need, including the ube paste in a jar! Yummy!
