www.logmein.com has good remote access program but the free version doesn't provide files transfer feature you want.

If you have XP Pro, it will already have Remote Desktop desktop installed. Just need to go to "System Properties" and "Remote" tap. And enable the "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer".

Then other people can use the Remote Desktop Connection program which is already in all XP (home and Pro) computer and most of other Microsoft OS to connect to that computer. If not already in those other Microsoft OS, then can download the client from Microsoft site.
And Remote Desktop Connection allow easy file/printers/serial ports sharing.

Otherwise, you can try VNC. And for performance, try TightVNC or UltraVNC since both have video driver include as part of the softwre (which should mean better quality/performance). But if you use it over internet, better use some kind of secure connection like VPN or SSHD.

" Tight VNC " is a free program that helps you to do that.
You need to install that program on both PCs and one will act like a server and the other one will be like a client, you just need to type the IP of the remote computer and connect . Cool program.

Download it @ : http://www.tightvnc.com/download.html

Peace.

What is VNC?

VNC, or Virtual Network Computing, is software that makes it possible to view and interact with a computer from any other computer or device connected to the internet. VNC is even cross-platform, so a person using a Windows-based computer can connect to and interact with a Unix system without any problems whatsoever.

VNC essentially "converts" your computer into whichever computer you are connecting to. For example, if I am at home with my desktop computer running Windows XP and I need to use ArcGIS (or any other Unix program), all I have to do is run my VNC software and connect to one of CAE's Unix machines. Once that is done my personal computer will look and act like a Unix lab machine, and whenever I want to I can exit and use my Windows programs!

For those of you familiar with Windows' Remote Desktop, VNC does the same thing but allows you to connect to Unix and Linux machines. To realize the full benefits of VNC, you just have to try it yourself!
