In the Polynesian CC I overheard a cast member say "tourists Go Home" when she didn't think anyone was listening.

I live in Hawaii for 7 yrs and although some native Hawaiians do not like ANY outsiders b/c they feel like the land and cultures are being disrespected, tourism is the main economy for Hawaii so they better just deal with it I guess b/c that's the main source of where the state's money comes from.... Did you like it? I graduated there and I CAN'T WAIT to go back ;o)

You obviously heard very wrong!!!! Yes, I am Gloria that Maui told you about in his answer to your question. Hawaiians do not hate tourists (without the tourists, Waikiki would more than likely be "done for". It is not that they hate tourists it is more that quite a few tourists think they can "do what they want to do" and get away with it, just because they are tourists! How would you like it if someone came to your state, or country from some place else, and "did their own thing"??? You for sure would not like it either!
Just "hang loose" and what u might have possibly "over heard", might have been something with regard to something that had happened and go on with your life!
The Hawaiians share the "aloha spirit" and I try to bring it home to Michigan whenever possible!
Yes, my husband, our son (he will be 26 next month), and myself have been to Oahu six times, and wouldn't think of ever not making it our most favorite vacation spot.
Don't let things "that u might have heard" spoil Hawaii for you!
Jus "hang loose" brah!! And enjoy life and the aloha spirit!!

Okay, I've been living on Oahu, Hawaii for my entire life (16 years) and we don't really hate tourists. I'm about an eigth of Native Hawaiian and know the Hawaiian culture. First of all tourism is really what are economy is dependant upon. So we can't really hate tourists. We usually show aloha (love) and ho'ihi (respect) to everybody. We start hating tourists when they disrespect our culture and the people. You give respect, you get respect. Just don't go to Hawaii thinking you own the damn place and thinking we're all inferior to you. Hawaii is a great place to vacation and experience a different culture, and I don't think you'll have to worry about us hating you.

Everywhere in the world you're going to run into ignorant people, & tyey are a small % of the population no matter where you go in the U.S..Tourism is one of the, if not the largest industry in the state. That cast member gets paid by....the tourists. I know what your thinking & I apologize for that. Hawaii has just as many if not more friendly, open, helpful, people that will not only give u the shirt off their back but go out of their way to help you out. I am surprised that you didn't run into many other people that live here, that you spoke to & interacted with that you would even have to ask that question. Tell u what, I'll give u a reference, a family from Michigan who comes here almost every year, I just met them & their 28 yr. old son. Her name is Gloria, right here on this chatroom. We have this spiritual phenomenon called "Aloha", even when tourists have an unfortunate crime committed against them there is a fund to help them out. I hope u return & have a great time, I prefer Maui, spent 16 yrs. there. Aloha!

Probably resent is a better word, there are some that behave so poorly I definitely could say I hated.

I saw one guy take his jeep and purposely run over a flock of birds feeding on the side of the road. He was laughing like it was a big joke, his gf/wife was laughing as well. I yelled at him, but don't think he cared. If I had a rock close by I would have knocked him out. I've had many tourists run up on my bumper cause they are in a hurry to get somewhere. I've also been run of the road riding my bike. While I was on the ferry to Maui some drunk lady threw beer on me, she was trying to splash it on her husband. If my gf hadn't stopped me I would have thrown her overboard. She didn't even try to apologize.

I would think so. Tourists are typically very annoying and obnoxious, and have no respect for the culture of the place they are visiting. This doesn't apply to every tourist, but they tend to act that way when in large groups and a few ruin it for the rest of us.

Hate??? No, Hawaiian people are very warm, caring and family oriented people. Most Hawaiians would do anything to help you and want to welcome you into their families "Ohana".

I grew up in Hawaii and currently live overseas. I love Hawaii and the Hawaiian people they are No Ka Oi "The best"
