They aren't supposed to - the physical should catch it. There are really good reasons for this - think SMOKE - chemical fumes - toxic off gassing of burning materials such as plastics and carpeting - hazardous materials. It is not just for the asthmatic firefighters safety, (these can all cause a deadly asthma attack, or worsen the severity of asthma in someone with even very mild asthma), but also for the safety of the other firefighters. Remember, they depend upon each other. I know it is unfortunate, but some things in life aren't fair. There are lots of other things asthmatics can do in similar fields. I am an asthmatic, too, and work as a paramedic. Hope this helps.

Probably depends how severe it is, I have asthma, but I haven't had to use my inhailer in a LONG time (at least 4 years), my doctor tells me that he wouldn't even know I had asthma if it wasn't on my confidentials folder... So basically I'm saying that it probably depends how good your lungs are.
I'm 16 btw.
