Yes. According to the teachings of the early church and the Apostle's Creed, Jesus descended into hell. We are taught that he did so to free all the souls who had died before his coming and free them so they could go to heaven. In the Christian view, heaven and salvation did not exist until Jesus' death on the cross.
Bible Evidence: 1 Peter 3:18-19.
". . . in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison . . . (NKJV) 1 Peter 3:18
Verses 18 and 19 tell us that Jesus died, returned to life, and then visited the spirits who are in prison.

Some say 1 Peter 3:19 refers to it. "Hell" is an Anglo-Saxon word indiscriminately used in place of several Greek and Hebrew words in the scriptures. "Sheol" (Hebrew) or "Hades" (Greek) referred to the common grave of humanity. (The concept of an afterlife was just starting to be developed among the Jews back then.) That is the "hell" where Jesus is supposed to have gone to redeem the righteous who had died before he did.. The other hell, "Tartarus" (or "Gehenna") is the nasty place we always hear about. Jesus wouldn't go there. There would be no point under the current theological schema.

I Peter Chapter 3 verse 18-19.All that death could claim of Christ was the natural body of flesh. His Spirit was alive evermore to meet those that died before HIS PHYSICAL COMING to give them a chance at eternal life,if they would accept his word. The three days and three nights was the time that Christ went into the grave or hell ot preach to the dead or the people that died in their sins.

Yes he went for a couple of reasons...
1) Psalms 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
1 Peter 3:19
Jesus went to preach to the spirits in prison
the one who died believing the promise, and the one who never had access to the promise. ...Yes one who did not get a chance to hear the promise of the messiah
based on Ecclesiastes 9:11 I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. God is so just that he allowed even those spirits not having access the time and opportunity to choose.
Ephesians 4:8 Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
9. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
10. He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)...Got a clue from these verses where hell is...The lower parts..don't stop at 6 feet under...there are many verses if you research that show hell is in the center of the earth...either way he descended first before he ascended...but he took them with him who were bound and choose him
2) He went to take back what the devil stole from us and him....Revelations 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
The devil took the keys in the garden...and Jesus went down and took them back...God bless

Some people believe it, because they don't know what their own Bible even teaches.
What do these names Sheol, Hades, Gehenna, Queber, Tartarus, Abyss, Hell, and the Lake of Fire mean?
When people learn this. They will see where Jesus went.
. Good Q*.

The Apostles Creed (as translated) uses the language "he descended into hell".
Our best understanding is that this means he died and was buried, and during that time, he freed the souls of the just from their captivity, and brought them to heaven.
Whether he stopped by hell to drop Satan off is pure speculation.

This is part of whats called the Pauline revelation. It is slowly revealed in the writings of St. Paul as he looks at the life of Jesus in the light of the old testament scriptures

It's in Acts. He descended and rose again to take the keys of Hell or Hades from Satan, taking the power of sin from the deceiver so the Holy Spirit could come to guide us.

Acts 2:27 shows that this prophecy is to be applied to Jesus. Please note, however, that hell is simply the common grave of mankind--not a place of firey torment.
