My son, daughter in law, and their 3 yr daughter & 6 month old daughter have been there for 4 long months (well not for them but definitely for me). My son is a LT. & they have great housing
on base, a 2 story duplex, 2100 square feet with garage & fenced in back yard great for their lab. They love the beautiful parks for camping & hiking. My daughter in law has made a ton of friends & set up a great play group for 3 yr old.
Because of the snow, they decided on base was better for them.
My son will ride his bike to training his group (he is a mountain biker, they also ski, rock climb, boulder, hike - they both graduated from a University in mountains, so it is like going home to them) She even likes the base doctors & dentists. Summers - it averaged around the 70s or low 80s - we were envious on our 98 degree days. Other than the distance from family, they have found no compliants. I fly up in 2 weeks & can hardly wait to see area. They found no "cow country" just quiet beautiful place. It is what you make of it.
Watertown is the town that is closest to them - Walmart, Ganders, restuarants.
Good luck! Look on line at housing choices, they have a great website - they got lucky since he is a Ranger, they started his day of being on list as day of starting Ranger School (I think that was how my son explained it - he does not talk much, like his Dad)

I have lived near there my whole life. As far as housing they are building all new townhouses on post right now, the first family moved into the first unit just last week. As far as what to do, it depends on the time of year, skiing and snowmobiling in winter, summer you are only 20 minutes away from the 1000 islands, Lake Ontario and Canada. Lake Placid is also nice, only about a 2 hour drive through the Adirondacks. Also, the winters here are a little bit harsher than Rhode Island. I remember one December we got 120 inches of snow and it didn't even start until the 12th of December.

My daughter and her husband were stationed at Ft. Drum. Compared to the housing they had at Ft Bragg, the place was a dump. Took them weeks to act on a work order. There is housing both on and off post. My son in-law was an E6 and their housing was off post. There wasn't much of anything to do. My daughter called it cow country, lots of farming in the area and one time on a drive to work, she actually came upon a cow standing in the middle of the highway. Drum is a very small post. I don't remember how I did it, but I did check it out on line when they first got orders. If you can find it, you can learn a little about the post and the school district. There are no schools on post.
