Like many others have said the national Guard is a State's military force.. The us army reserve is a federal agency... however the national guard and Army reserve both serve in many of the same ways... here are some differences

1. The National Guard is generally more Combat and combat support type of units.. The Reserve is more of the Non Combat MOS"s such as engineers and construction.
1. Benefits wise The National Guard is much better.. not only do you get the exact same Federal Benefits taht the reserves get, you also get the States benefit's... All the states differ as far as what they offer, but they all offer somthing inaddition to regualar pay.. Wisconsin for isntance has the 100% tuition payback for all National Guard soldiers.. Can't get that in the reserves.
2. National Guard is more likely to be deployed depending on what kind of unit your in... Alot of the times Reserve units are deployed piece by piece where as National Guard units are activated frequently to areas ... Ya Iraq is one fo them... You can still be called up from the reserves, but chances are you won't be as likely as a combat National Guard unit.
3. The training is exactly the same in the guard and reserves... everyone trains on active duty anyway so in basic traiing your all the same.
4. National Guard units are activated during many at home crisis situations whereas the Reserves are very seldom used on the home front.

... If you are thinking of which one you wanna choose go Guard all the way.. the extra benefits are worth it.

The Army Reserve augments the regular army whereas the National Guard is actually owned by the individual states.
The Army reserve answers to the President, while the National Guard answers to a governor.

The National Guard can however, be called upon to augment the regular army in times of need.

The Army reserves are part of the regular Army who train in a regular boot camp but then are only required to do one weekend a month unless you are activated to full time status. The National Guard is run by the State and is for backing up police emergencies (in rare cases), state emergencies, natural disasters etc., and also meets once a month. I believe they both have two week drills in the Summer.

The national gaurd serves first under the governor's of the state which they are from (like "Indiana National Guard") and are used first for homeland security activities within their state or sent to assist other states, but may federalized and put under the command of the president. The reserves don't have any governors in their command structure, but are called up only by the federal gov't.

The National Guard is a component of the Reserves that is normally under State control and on State orders, but can be put on Federal orders. The USAR is always on Federal orders.

the guard is most often called up for stateside support when there are disasters, patroling US waters, etc. Army reserve goes out to support the units outside the US where needed.

Rather self explanitory. Guard units are under State Control. Other than that they serve the same function as a back up to the active force.
