If you mean Mavic wheel set Ksyrium ES?
It is because 10 years ago, Mavic produced Helium: the first lightweight climbing specific wheel. The new Ksyrium ES is sort of "homage" to the helium wheel set (which was red) and has the red spoke to remind us of the Helium.

No purpose other than marketing. You're talking about the Mavic Ksyrium Special Edition road wheels, right? There's no performance advantage whatsoever- it's just for looks.

This was originaly to tell how fast your wheel is spining. With all silver it looks more f a blur but with one red it is easier to tell the speed. Also people now use the to repair the bikes so they have a marked spot usualy 180 degrees from the pump valve
