My dogs think baby carrots and cheese are great treats! Bones are recommended by my vet---you want them uncooked. Cooked ones are dangerous. Freeze dried liver dog treats, and dried chicken tenders for dogs, are good and you can get at PetSmart and Petco. The pricier pet stores that have more holistic foods have the treats I'm told to seek out---not grain, but more meaty. I look to avoid soy products---very hard to find, at grocery store and most pet store chains. Natural peanut butter, in Kongs or stuff a bone. Bananas are popular at agility trials I attend, but that's about the only food my dogs will have nothing to do with!

Raw bones are great, cooked bones can splinter and injury your dog.
Most treats made for dogs are great, but check for what is in them.
My dog is getting peanut butter Good-O's for treats at the moment.
The jury is still out on garlic. Some say, as it is in the onion family, it build up toxins in their system. Others say it is good for them and swear by it as flea control. Both sides are "experts" so that is one to decide for yourself, but I have the feeling that a dog would have to eat kilos of the stuff for it to do harm, but that is just my opinion.
When I go out I give my dog the dried/smoked pig ears to keep her occupied and also the hide "bones" or rolls if I am going to be a while. It helps with her separation anxiety (I leave the radio on as well) Oops, I digressed.

If you dog will eat them, apple slices and carrot sticks are good. Not all dogs will like this though. Don't give them grapes. For commercial products, honestly, the IAMS chewers are good and they clean the teeth at the same time. They are like a tannish color and look like a double sided tooth brush. My dogs love them. Stay away from Greenies though. They are known for not breaking down with saliva and can actually get stuck in your dogs throat. Milk bones are okay. Peanut butter is a good treat to most dogs. Not all of them will like it though.

Raw beef bones are good. Good for teeth and will keep them busy for hours.
Also any kind of cooked meat that doesn't have alot of salt or seasonings added to it. If you don't mind spending the money, the best place to get treats is at the vet if they have a store attached or at a good high pet quality store.
Stay away from anything with garlic...not sure what it does but heard it's bad for dogs.

You can give your dogs String Cheese because it has a neutral ph and won't upset most dog's stomachs. However I strongly suggest just getting treats that are made for dogs. This is usually a cheaper and healthier option for you and the dog.

The best treat for dogs that I have ever used was liver, I have bought it freeze dried and I have made jerky out of it, I use it for training. Haven't met a dog yet that didn't love it. And you know it is good for them. And it is cheap!

Lowfat plain or honey sweetened yogurt. Maybe vanilla but be careful of artificial sweeteners or flavors. My dogs love plain yogurt.
My friend's vet recommended she feed her dog Cheerios to help lower her dog's cholesterol. She feeds her dog the plain formula. I feed mine the Honey Nut (no milk). Both our dogs love it.
Veggies (if you can get them to eat them) of course are healthy and some dogs will eat fruit but mine won't.

I've heard that garlic is good for dogs, so if you are making "people" food with garlic (and you don't mind the smell) you might want to share a little with your four-legged buddy.
