The build up of salts in the soil.
It's usually caused by over irrigation of poorly draining soils, which either lets salts in the water settle out and leech into the soil or leaves the salts behind when the water evaporates.
It can lead to reduction in crop productivity of 25% or more
Deliberate salinization can be used to kill unwanted plants, but there are then problems with flushing the salts out when you want to use the land again, the salts simply get washed into rivers and cause problems downstream.
EDIT
CAPTAIN MOE - YOUR ANSWER IS RUBBISH - THAT IS DESALINATION

it means the addition of SALT
eg: saline rinse for eyes is water with salt to make it more "tear" like.
when the soil suffer from salination it means that salt deposits have been left in the soil from water rising (eg: irrigation from farming is the most common culprit.) so now nothing can grow in the soil anymore.

saline = salt
salinization = adding salt
desalinization = removing salt, as in taking talk out of sea water to make drinkable fresh water
