Where did you get the idea that we must forget?
We all make mistakes. Some are bad, some are very bad, and some are absolutely horrendous.
The God of the Bible is a God of justice, and well as a God of forgiveness. Someone who commits rape or murder will have to deal with the consequences.
But the merciful God knows all, and is capable of forgiving everything if we truly seek forgivness.

When they nailed Jesus, an innocent man to the cross in the worlds most unbearable agony, he asked God to forgive them. Now as humans we are to forgive , as he did. but that does not mean we forget and it does not mean restoration. Forgiveness is something you do for your OWN soul. There are people who forgive a horrible crime committed on them or a family member , even if that person has no remorse. It is something you do spiritually, knowing that Jesus has forgiven all your sins. But we have a right to never forget or accept that person into our lives again.
