You can do it yourself. Just cut the flight feathers only (the long ones).
Don't cut too close though because they will have trouble all their life.

A stupid vet did my cockatiel wings she has trouble with them all the time. They bleed, get swollen and feathers fall because he cut too near the area where the feathers begin to grow.

I breed birds

You can clip them your self. You only clip one if you don't want them to fly away, all that will happen is they will land on the floor. The easiest way to do it is get a dish towel put it over the top of the bird and grab the bird with both hands so you can control the head (so it wont bite you) have another person grab one wing pull it open and trim flight feathers. We owned birds for years and that's the easiest way to clip them.

I agree that for the first time, take your bird to a vet have them show you the proper technique, then you can decide for yourself if you feel comfortable enough doing it at home. There is definately a technique to it...trim too much and your bird will drop like a rock when it tries to fly and can severely hurt itself. Don't trim enough and your bird can get itself into all sorts of trouble (flying out a door, into a window, onto a stove, etc).

I'd also recommend a vet over a pet store or breeder...my first cockatiel's wings were trimmed at the breeder before I took him home and they butchered his wings so badly that he dropped like a rock and was constantly hitting his wings and body on things on the way down. He also broke off every one of his tail feathers, the poor thing! :(

Your local pet shop should be able to clip a bird's wings. Also, your local avian vet can do it. A breeder can also clip the wings, and even show you how to do that.

Put a light towel over its head this will calm it down a bit, open a wing and cut the FLIGHT feathers off on one wing, when it starts to grow back & can nearly fly again do the other side so its always off balance, after a while it will just give up flying & you got a bird thats forgotten to fly!
( the cheapest method) & its easy.

Aside from a Vet you can check to see if you have any local Breeders nearby. Most Breeders know how to safely and correctly clip the flight feathers. If you do have a Breeder to do the grooming make sure you ask them if they know how to check for blood feathers and would they know how to stop an emergency bleeding should they accidently clip a blood feather. If they don't then just contact your local Vet.

Your vet can do it, ask to watch the first time, and then you can do it yourself, all my friends with birds do, but make sure to watch a professional the first time so you know how. There are sites online that tell you how but I would want to observe once just to make sure I didn't do it wrong.

You can have your avian vet do it, or most large pet store chains will do it. Watch closely, and ask questions. You should be able to try it yourself after seeing it a couple of times. I asked my vet the first time if I could help, and she was more than glad to let me.

most pet stores that sell birds and vets that treat birds will cut their nails and wings. Most of the pet stores do it free so try that first. Good Luck.
