Well, first ya gotta have talent....and then practice. Don't try to sound like anyone else, be indy and develop your own style. Be true to YOU. Listen to constructive criticism but don't buy into any radical criticisms against your talents.....unless you know for certain they're genuine.
Record yourself, san music and listen, really HEAR how you sound and critique yourself occasionally & watch your growth.
There are programs you can use with your puter to test your pitch and learn to modulate yourself. All you need is a mic and headphones & they usually come with all the extras.
A home Karaoke unit is a great tool as well.
Don't strain your voice! Use potions that will smooth out your vocal cords like warm teas with honey, never cold beverages.
Good luck!

The first thing is good musical ear, second a good voice, your muscles should be able to sing exactly the sound in perfect tune. Third your musical training and a proper voice technique.

Practice, and listen; both to the note you want to sing, and to the note that comes out of your mouth.
