From Washinton Sq. Take the A or C uptown to Columbus Circle; switch to 1 or 9 uptown to the next stop (Lincoln Center)

If you are close to Sheridan Sq. you can pick up the 1 or 9 there.

It is about 20 minutes on the subway. NYU is in Greenwich Village and Juillard is uptown, so if you took a cab it would be horrendous. It would really take forever - especially if you went during rush hour. Your best best is taking the subway.
