I'm still alive, and I used to use rusty pans all the time. I quit doing it after I got some good ones, though. When you pay 15 bucks for a set of pans, they are bound to rust before too long.

My folks used a cast iron pan that had some rust on it to make spaghetti sauce-- my dad said that added iron into it. I don't know if it's true, but I turned out okay (so far!) and have 3 healthy kids. Just have him scour the pan and dry it right away so it doesn't get rusty.

Very true.
This was a common way to get iron into the diet over a hundred years ago. It is still a good source. After dinner clean the iron pots and pans and wipe dry. You can slow down the oxidation process by rubbing a light coat of vegetable oil on the items. The really heavy iron dishes are the best!

No, its not safe. Buy a new pan. If you can't afford to buy a new one soon, make sure you use a steel wool to scrub off all the rust. Keep it from rusting again by rubbing some oil over it after you wash & dry the pan.

Trust me.....The iron from a rusty pan (I would guess it to be a cast iron pan) is not only harmless....it's actually beneficial!! As "socially" said, this was once the best way of getting your iron intake, which is absolutely necessary for life. People who eat from rusty pans will never have to worry about being anemic.

Not a good idea, especially if the pan was once covered in teflon. Teflon, CF5 (1 carbon, 5 fluorine) is toxic in relatively minute quantities. That's nothing to feed a baby.

If it was harmful, I wouldn't be around. They used to make pans and stuff out of low grade tin. If you'd let food sit in these for awhile, You could get what was once called tin poisoning.

It will be fine, but the pan does need to be scrubbed cleaned. Iron is OK. I hope this helps.
