We have a litter of three kittens that were born July 4. Two of them are doing fine and very playful. The third one has suddenly stopped eating and is loosing weight rapidly, we wormed him last week and it didn't seem to do anything. He still gets around and plays with the others but looks bad. Our vet is out of town for a seminar till thursday and the other vet is booked till wednesday and the jerk he is wouldn't make room. Anyone know of anything that can try till our vet gets back

We live in a very small community and all areas around us are that way ( for100 miles the biggest town is population 4000) We have 2 vets within a 50 mile radius ours and the jerk. The closest animal hospital is more than 100 miles away.

The kitten still plays, lets the kids pack it around, nice moist nose no vomiting or runs just not eating.

You can save your kitten.

Purchase KMR (Kitten Milk Replacement). Begin feeding him immediately. Purchase a syringe if he will not feed from a bottle. You may need to force feed the kitten.

Make the formula according to the package. If anything, add an extra bit of water.

Is he vomiting?
Does he have the runs?
If he does, he is running a SEVERE RISK of dehydration. IF HE BEGINS VOMITING OR GET THE RUNS, DOUBLE THE MIXTURE OF WATER IN THE FORMULA!

Keep him warm and isolated from the other kittens. Give him a toy or such to play with to keep him occupied.

Is he isolating himself from the other kittens?
Is he extremely vocal?
Will he refuse to allow you pick him up?
Does he cry when you do?

If you answer yes to two or more to these questions, YOUR KITTEN MAY BE FAILING! You need to take action IMMEDIATELY if he begins showing any of these symptoms. Feed him the formula immediately, make sure the water is warm to luke-warm.

I'm currently nursing two kittens who suddenly began failing. They are almost up to full body weight.

DO NOT ALLOW HIM TO NURSE FROM MOMMA IF HE IS VOMITING! DO NOT EXPOSE HIM TO SOFT FOOD/HARD FOOD!

Sometimes kittens develop very slowly. If he has been on either of these, immediately stop feeding him the food and put him on a strict formula+water diet.

Get him in to see the vet ASAP.

I used to be a vet nurse/animal attendant with the RSPCA here in AUS. I would advise if you CANT and I mean you try every option to get to a vet. If you really cant you need some kitten milk that you can buy from pet stores or grocery stores. Not cows milk. You need a small syringe and you use it as a way to feed the kitten. Make sure its not cold but also not hot about the same as you would a baby. Also you need to keep it warm. Cats have a higher normal temperature to humans so you need to keep an eye on that. If you need to give it a wipe down with a damp cloth just to help it clean itself. Other than that just keep a close eye on it. Try to give it feed every hour or every 2 hours. Nice and slow feeding dont force to much. Hope this helps. But you must try to find a different vet.

Things can progress very quickly in a kitten.

There's sure to be a 24/7 emergency clinic in your area; either that or the various practices around the area take turns being available for emergencies. Find out and bring kitty there.

If it's after hours where you are, call your vet's clinic and you'll probably get an answering machine message telling you what to do if you have an emergency.

Not eating can be deadly. It can trigger hepatic lipidosis which is a lethal liver condition, and even if it doesn't, lack of adequate nutrition in a young kitten can have all kinds of very serious consequences.

I would not wait until Wed. I would try to find another vet or go to an animal hospital that takes emergencies. The only reason I know of for why a kitten would loose weight is worms. Again don't wait take him to another vet. Good luck. Maybe you want to try to change the food that you are giving the kitten, sometimes that helps as well.

The cat really needs to be seen quickly. Like infant children, young kittens can get dehydrated very easily. If your cat *looks* sick, he *is* sick.

Find another vet nearby, even if you have to drive a bit. Otherwise, show up at the in-town vet's office the moment they open up and tell them you're not leaving until they see the cat.

I find it hard to believe that a vet operates on appts only with no provisions for emergency patients. So if a dog gets hit by a car, too bad so sad, make an appt? Good luck.
