I have taken both effexor (helped) and paxil (was terrible and made me gain so much weight) for my depression and also anxiety. I am scared to try another one because I don't want to get big again, and i also didn't like the side effects of paxil (but effexor wasnt bad). My doctor said I could try wellbutrin because if anything you lose weight on it, but i heard it causes anxiety (and she prescribed it for depression and anxiety). has anyone tried it and actually lost weight (or didn't gain any) and it worked?

I lost weight on Wellbutrin. It's also supposed to be the only antidepressant that doesn't lower your sex drive, but it kind of messed up mine a bit, who knows. All antidepressants are going to mess you up a bit, because they change the chemicals in your brain. When I took Wellbutrin, I had anxiety which I didn't have before about simple things like going to school and I made some somewhat bad choices. (I ended up completely disliking the guy I dated when I went off it, who knows) But the weirdest side effects were my strange sleep habits and dry mouth. It's better than most antidepressants. Always look up medications on Wikipedia, it's great for going through medicine cabinets. (jk) But try to go off it as soon as possible, it is helpful though.

Important information

You should not take Wellbutrin if you have seizures, an eating disorder, or if you have suddenly stopped using alcohol, seizure medication, or sedatives. If you take Wellbutrin for depression, do not also take Zyban to quit smoking.
Do not use Wellbutrin if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
Wellbutrin may cause seizures, especially in people with certain medical conditions or when using certain drugs. Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions and the drugs you use.
Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Your doctor will need to check your progress at regular visits while you are using Wellbutrin. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms.
Report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, such as: mood or behavior changes, anxiety, panic attacks, trouble sleeping, or if you feel impulsive, irritable, agitated, hostile, aggressive, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), more depressed, or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself.

I didn't gain or lose weight on Wellbutrin but i think it helped me to NOT gain weight. I eat more than I did before taking the medication and still have not gained any weight. I have been on it for 6 months but just switched to something else.

Wellbutrin really did help with my depression but it gave me terrible side effects that I just cannot continue to deal with. for one, I have had major hair loss. I usually have thick hair and I have lost so much that I can actually see my scalp in some spots on my head. my hair is brittle and dull as well. I never had this problem before starting the Wellbutrin and I don't take any other medications besides birth control but I have been on that for 6 years with no problems.

Obviously Wellbutrin just doesn't work too well with my body chemistry but maybe it'll work great for you. if you start having hair loss though, don't assume it'll go away~ it'll only get worse.
Good Luck! I hope it works out for you.

I have taken Effexor and Wellbutrin at the same time and it worked wonders. I have not had any side effects of weight gain or weight loss.

I'm on Welbutrin for my depression. I have not gained weight on it. I know you are concerned about your weight & some concern is good, but I wouldn't get obsessed with my weight. I just want to be mentally at peace above all else; weight issues take a lesser concern for me. Mental stabilization is what I desperately want. Welbutrin has helped tremendously with my depression. I agree that it does not do anything about easing anxiety. Talk to your doctor. Good luck.

I've been on it... the first two weeks were hard. I had major stomach issues (bloating and such, very painful for me) Though it may not happen to you. I did lose weight on it (not alot, but within a normal range) and I did feel better once it was in my system. I had a small case of the shakes the first two weeks as well, but as we all know, each medication effects everyone differently.

I've never taken an anti-depressant that worked. I was discontinued by my doctor of all the ones I tried as ineffectual. I've tried cynaquan, if I'm spelling it right it's been over a decade, well butrin if that's the one that doubles as a quit smoking pill that I smoked up a storm on. I've tried several other ones I can't remember the names of. Basically you just have to deal with it and move on. Those pills never did nothing for me.

Everyone reacts differently to medication. What might help someone lose weight may not be the same for you. If you want to try it, try it. If you don't like it after a few months then you can always ask your doctor to stop it.

Zoloft works best so says every doc I ever knew. I have had WB,Prozac and zoloft and zoloft worked best,. I never took it long enough to see if any weight gains. The doc who gave me zoloft mention others were causing weight gain but I said no I don't want that so she gave zoloft.

I only took it for a month but almost all ADs kill your sex drive so be prepared.

SAM-e works good if your depression is not sevre. It dumps serotonin versus building it. If you are not building enough avoid SAM-e.

Best of luck.

My sister in-law was taking Wellbutrin. I don't know if she's still taking it or not.

I suffer from major depression with anger issues and I take Lexapro, Remaron, and Topamax.
