The long hair represented wild eyed liberalism that destroyed all she cherished and the beard made her look old.
My mother had the same problem. Wouldn't let me drive her car when I came home from college over Christmas. I had a Lebanese room mate and we wanted to go to Washington DC to see the sights. It was a cold drizzly day so I cut the beard, drove the car, grew the beard back.

Because Jesus lived in a time when long hair and beards was the norm. Today it is not. My parents never liked it when I dated long-haired hippie freaks with beards and it was even okay with them that my brother had longish hair in the mid-70's because that was the common style for teens then.
