My husband has the French name - Giyom (in spite of the fact that he's Russian :) and he's not sure that he uses the name correctly. Also he hasn't any idea what Giyom means. Could you educate us, please! Thank you!

The French name "Guillaume" (pronounced gee-yoam) is equivalent to the English name "William." I think the name's origins are probably from some medieval European language -- not sure which one -- but there were several early English kings by that name, most notably "William the Conqueror" who led the Norman (French) forces to victory over the Saxons (German) at the battle of Hastings in 1066. Not sure of the original derivation, though... Good luck!

Guillaume - William.
You'll find other examples of the French 'gu' becoming the English 'w'; for instance guarenne is the French form of warren, as in rabbit warren. Or guerre becoming war.
