Warnings

Suicide Risk. All antidepressants (not just SSRIs) carry warnings about suicide. In October 2004, the Food and Drug Administration began requiring that manufacturers include a warning on package inserts for all antidepressants. The warning mentions the risk of suicidal thoughts, hostility and agitation in both children and adults.

After you start taking any antidepressant, there is a risk that you may feel worse rather than better. The danger is greatest in the first few weeks of treatment, so make sure you follow-up with your doctor. There is also a small risk for an increase in suicidal thinking and behavior. Fortunately, research shows that the overall suicide rate lowers in people taking antidepressants. However, a small number of people using antidepressants encounter a lower mood, and feel more anxious, irritable, self-destructive or impulsive.

I'm taking an anti-depressant. My doc warned me when we first started me on them that I was to take myself IMMEDIATELY to the ER if I became suicidal. He warned me of the side effects. I never had to take myself to the ER. My life on an anti-depressant is a thousand times better than it was before I took a med. I remember being suicidal at age 6. I wish I had gotten on one sooner. I didn't take myself to the doc for this until I was in my 40s; too long to suffer this way, but I finally got the help I needed.

After a very bad accident and not being able to work at the job I loved I too became depressed. I took several different types of antidepressants, after about 1 1/2 years I got off the things and feel much better. However, I do know people who can't have a normal life w/o them, it depends on the person and the care of the doctor.

Most reasoning for this is because it takes sometimes 4-6 weeks for an antidepressant drug to start working, so the person is still depressed and may committ suicide. Most likely it is not the drug's fault but the depression.

Effexor made me feel like I was sick, Cymbalta I had excessive sweating and was even put on Seroquel and I was hot all the time and felt lethargic all the time. What works for you, might not work for me, so it highly selective among different people. Good luck with your search, Paxil appears to be working for now. Take care!

This is not a question here, looks more like a survey.
Anticonvulsants, aka antidepressants, work by stabilizing neurotransmitters in the brain. Obviously if it is your brain there could be side effects until the correct medication & levels are found.
