This is what my favorite pastor once told me when i was in high school, that everytime christ forgives a sin, he suffers as much as he did the first time he was crucified, died, and rose, ascended into hell, the whole nine yards--it's like he goes through it all over again every time he forgives a mortal of a sin. Shouldn't this motivate christians to be better people, or can the majority of them even handle looking at it this way, if they have to deal with that guilt?

The Bible does not support what your pastor told you. He is twisting a verse that warns Christians not to knowingly and purposefully sin. By doing so, the passage says, causes them to trample underfoot the blood of Christ.

To me this means that when someone who is a Christian knowingly sins, they are disrespecting the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross.

I believe somewhere it also goes on to say that to do so is like a "dog returning to its vomit" which dogs are known to do. This seems to convey the idea that Christians who knowingly return to their habitual sins are returning to something putrid. This is probably how God sees it from His perspective, and also how we SHOULD see it from ours. Whether the "sin" (failure to meet God's perfect expectations for us), is cigarette smoking or looking at porn on the internet...either way it is ourselves we hurt the most. We end up wallowing in a pool of our own waste, spiritually speaking and sometimes literally. Especially true if the cigarette smoking turns into cancer or the habit of porn causes husbands to waste their libidos on a lifeless computer rather than loving their wives as they should.

This should certainly discourage determined and sincere Christians to resolve not to "sin" or return to "sinful" habits they once had.

But the Bible also says that Christ was crucified once.* This negates the necessity for Jesus Christ to die over and over again whether only in someone's perception or in another spiritual dimension.

Your pastor seems to have been using aversion therapy. Reward, encouragement and incentive seem much better ways to encourage people not to return to habits that only hurt themselves in the long run.

No, I don't believe so. Christ suffered and died once for all of our sins. But, I do look at it like this: When we sin, we increase the suffering that Christ went through. Hard to think of it that way with our understanding of time, but Christ died for all sins, past and future. So, when we sin, that is that much more guilt that Jesus had to bear. Not bear again, mind you, but already had to bear.

Awww, Arn't you sweet?! Yes Honey, this would motivate (gullible) Christians to be better people - That's why he said it! Another example of how the Church will use fear to control you. Start researching other ways of life before you decide what to believe in. I recommend Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsh. I have read many different materials and this book is by far the one which makes most sense. Don't make up your mind until you have every side to the story.

Unfortunately, your pastor looked at the crucifixon through the "eyes of man" and not from the "eyes of Jesus." Yes, Jesus died on the cross, but when you sin, he doesn't relive his crucifixion. He rejoices. He rejoices in the fact that you are special and truly loved by God. He rejoices because he understands how precious you are to God.

Think of all of the times that you sin in a minute...an hour...a day...a week...etc. If Jesus went through the crucifixon over and over, his life in heaven would SUCK! Your pastor has a negative view of Jesus. Jesus was happy. He was joyful. He was alive and lived life to the full on earth. How much more in heaven?

No the Atonement was infinite. It did not pay for a finite number of sins. Should we sin less? Sure. That is the path to happiness.

Christ's crucifiction is what motivates me to be a better person. I actually think that Christ died once for our sins, and does not go over the same process again and again. But either way, it is definitely Christ's sacrifice and love that encourages me and even demands of me to live for Him.

Christ also suffered when he died for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners that he might bring us safely home to God. He suffered physical death, but he was raised to life in the Spirit.
1st Peter 3:18

If he died for your sins that to me would mean no more suffering, as for his spirit he vary well could be here just like all the rest of the people that have died.

What an awful, manipulative, emotionally abusive thing to say to a child.

Every time you are bad you torture the son of god.......are you proud of making Jesus cry?

Child abuse in any form angers me!
