I can no longer keep my pitt bull/cur mix.. She is only 11 months old, dog friendly only, and absolutly LOVES kids (I have 3).. Unfortunatly, she learned she can jump my fence to play with the dog who lives behind us. I can't afford the electric fences and I just don't have the time to use an electric training collar.. She stays inside all the time besides her walks twice a day and thats not fair to her. I can't find a pitt rescue in my area, orlando, fla. I don't know anyone who wants another dog and I just don't know if I could take her to the shelter and risk them putting her to sleep. What, in your opinion, are my options? What would you do? I feel soo horrible but I feel that I'm just being selfish and irresponsible by keeping her when I could possibly, some how, find her a home where she can run and play as much as she can.

I've priced all kinds of electric fences and the cheapest, yes even regular electric fencing wire would cost around $300. I just can't afford it. I will be honest, right now we are living pay check to pay check..someone mentioned getting training pads, she's house broken, crate trained to boot, thats not the problem, her breed has too much energy to be cooped up in a house. She hasn't done anything "bad" I just can't keep up with her and 3 kids any more. My house smells more and more like a dirty dog every day, I can't shampoo carpets every day or every other day.. And I definatly can't wash her every day..

the electric wire is pretty cheap, you dont need a whole fence, just a wire where she likes to jump over the fence, it will only take her a couple zaps then she wont try anymore.

Since she's such a great dog otherwise, why not MAKE the time to use the remote collar? That's a simple solution if you really want to keep the dog. But It sounds like you're just not up to dealing with the dog, and the kids, and whatever life is handing you at the moment. You're using reverse psychology on yourself, talking about what's "best for the dog" and you being selfish to keep her. I'm reading that you want to get rid of her, what's best for you, not what's best for the dog.
I also live in Florida, and we both know what her chances are at the pound or an animal shelter. Pitts from a pound do require special handling, as people rarely know their background. In our state, and many others, fighting pitts is epidemic.
That said, I think you do need to find another home for this dog. For whatever reason, you aren't able to deal with her right now. That doesn't make you a bad person. I'm grateful that you recognized she is too much responsibility for you, and that you aren't taking out other frustrations on her, as people tend to do when they're overwhelmed.
Please continue your search for a shelter in your area. Be honest with them about the dog's background. That's everyone's main concern at a shelter, because we know we probably won't be able to adopt that dog out. If she gets along good with the neighbor's dog, tho, and wants a buddy, then she'll do well at a shelter with other creatures.
Please do make the right decision for the dog, and you'll both be a lot happier. Good luck to you.

Check out the link below. Make a call to one of these groups.
Training with 3 kids won't be easy, and you have a breed that can be stubborn to keep trained. Sometimes the match ups don't work, but you can make the situation better by finding her a group to help her find that right fit for a family.
Our family fosters animals for a rescue group. We see families get a dog breed all the time which is not a good match for their lifestyle. You are not being selfish by giving her to a rescue group. Being irresponsible would be letting her loose on the street, or dumping her at a shelter.
Next time your family feels ready for a dog, seek out a rescue group that can match up your family with the right dog. Our group works that way. We won't let families make that mistake, we want happy dogs and happy families.

I am a pit rescuer. Try to find a shelter that has a no kill policy. Try Petfinders.com They may be able to assist you in placement. Your dog is still young and can be taught to stay home. I have 4 pits myself and they stay inside most of the time. Walk her more often and be very firm about where she is allowed to play. If you can get a vets opinion about shelter facilities, you may have a contact. Do you really want to spend the time to have her trained? There are some very good puppy schools out there. Try Petsmart. They have classes you might like. Good Luck!

Have you thought of taking out an ad in the paper, that way you can decide who takes her into their home, and what their situation is. You don't want to give her to someone who isn't going to be able to care for her or give her the lifestyle she deserves. Also maybe try pet obedience classes. I brought my dog (a pit-lab mix) to petsmart for some classes and it helped very much! They aren't expensive or long in length of time and they usually offer different classes for different situations and such. Don't take her to a shelter, most are overloaded with pets as it is, and that should be your last resort.

There are lots of dogs that are inside dogs, mine included. Lots of playing, regular walking. Why do you have to leave a dog in the yard? Why have one at all? And you can rig a fence so she can't jump over. Like someone else said.....put away the easy button.

Don't feel too bad. You have recognized your limits and that's okay. Contact pit bull rescue at http://www.pbrc.net/. They an help,, and will only adopt her out to a family that can handle her. Be very careful about placing her through the newspaper. She's a special breed and needs a home that understands her needs.
Best of luck!:)

you take on a pet and you take on a responsibility. DON"T take her to a shelter. this dog is a member of your family, especially to your kids. MAKE the time to train her correctly, find a dog trainer, put her in doggie day care. rig up a "shelf" on the top of your fence that leans inward. there are so many other things you can do, please don't give your dog away!

Alright, I think yo should (a) if the fence is a chain link or another smaller fence, replace it with a privacy fence or (b) you should train her with the little pads tthat are at the pet store and walk her regularly.
