how clean do you really think soap is? I mean, I know it's supposed to be self-cleaning, but is it really likely that it would still be clean after it's used?

As a housekeeper, I have seen soap from gift baskets covered in dust and lint. I know under the right circumstances mildew can form under the soap and attach itself to the kinds of soaps made with high fat content for moisturizing.
I also know those bottles of moisturizing body wash that are made to stand upside down in the shower can let water in and I chased a strain of mildew around a shower stall till I found it was not just in the lid but up inside the bottle of Dove body wash. It happens more in those new product containers that are oval at the top.
But as for soap, you should rinse it before putting it on the soap dish and use one of those soap dish liners that look like a little plastic bed of nails that allow the soap to drain dry and not allow mold or mildew to form on it.
use a good soap scum remover like Scrub Free in the bath and shower and if you have a germ phobia, be sure to use an antibacterial soap.

There is a difference between "clean" and "germ free". The soap is still able to "clean" things after it has been used, but I doubt that it is "germ free".

its not clean after its been used, even if it anti-bacterial bar soap....my suggestion, don't share soap, or get body wash to clean yourself.
