Often it varies from school to school, but the general rule is White, yellow or gold, orange, blue, purple, green, brown (with several degrees in brown) sometimes red and then black.

typically it takes 2-3 months in the beginning and increases in time over the years from 4-6,8-10, up to a year or more for higher ranks.

there are quite a few "mcdojos" or "belt factories" as I like to call them that hand out belts as long as you're paying for the quantity of what's learned instead of the quality.

Most Martial arts that use belts are white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black. Some have a red belt or a purple belt which are esential between orange and green and blue and brown.
I have over 10 years of training in Judo. And I at times don't feel like I'm totaly ready for a black belt. So to say someone should have one after a couple years is rediculous.
Alot of dojos will move a 6 year old from white to black by the time they are 8. Does it make sence that anyone in 2 years let alone a child could really learn or understand all that is expected of a black belt. This gives people that false impression that they are ready to take on anyone. That goes for adults as well. It should be strictly based on skills and dicipline not time spent in the dojo.

Here are the different belt colors at my school. Every beginner is a white belt. Next is Gold (or Yellow), Orange, Blue, Purple, Green, Brown (there are three degrees of brown), and Black. How long it takes to get each belt depends on what type of school you attend. Some schools push people through very quickly just to have a higher turnout rate. At a school like that it could take you 2 or 4 years. At a school that is not so interested in the turnout rate and how much money they make, it could take quite a long time (like ten years if you start very young) before they think you are ready to become a black belt. Since every school is different, you should probably talk to your instructor about it.

It normaly takes around 3-4 months at a normal school. Thats about right if you are picking things up. The problem is that i have NEVER heard of anyone getting held back... even if they can't do the forms or know the terms. A good black belt in any form should take a few years. 2-3.

it depends mcdojos usually give black belts away like candy while real places it takes years. Also your not allowed to have a black belt unless you over the age 18.
