want to argue with those of us who do

2006-10-02 15:28:32 · 23 answers · asked by Anonymous in Society & Culture Religion & Spirituality

Thank you all for your answers. And you don't annoy me. Everyone can believe what they want. I'm not going to try and force what I believe on anyone. But I will share the great things that have happened to me because of my belief if anyone wants to hear. Then people can draw their own conclusions. =0)

We are either,

A) curious about what religious people really think and want to engage them.

B) curious about religion and/or spirituallity and want to find out more, maybe something will appeal to us, who knows?

C) Intrested in debating religious folk in the hope of showing them the Light. The Light of Reason that is.

D) many other reasons I havn't thought of.

I'm an atheist who comes here for both A and C. But I won't speak for all other non-believers.

Ethical obligation. Lo, I admit many of those who claim to aethists / agnostic are real jerks , just as those who are christian or muslim or hindu or any religeon. Thats human nature. However, the ethical obligation to spread Truth as we best understand it is what leads many of us here. Many religeons preach about conversion, and a belief in no diety is still a belief it is an answer to spirituallity. We seek to open the eyes to a truth , a mind without the boundries of fear, without the docrine of fairy tales are true. Christians would no sooner tell their children Titans walk the world today than I or most aethists would tell our children about talking burning bushes, lightning carving words on stone, and virgin births , and winged people of light. ITs all perspective. aetheists just like to keep it a more open perspective. all we ask is proof. without faith. christians ask for faith without proof. it is a contridiction and an irreconsilible (spellings atrocious i know) difference that will never be overcome.

Because of people like YOU who ask questions of us. What would you do if you had no atheists to answer your questions? What would the rest of the folks like you get if no real atheists and agnostics answered all the questions posed them? You'd get answers from people to whom the questions were NOT addressed, that's what.

And by the way, this isn't a "members only" section... this isn't the place EXCLUSIVELY for the religious and spiritual. This is the section in which ANYONE can ask questions that pertain in some way to religion and spirituality. That includes atheists and agnostics and anyone else.

To offer different perspectives on life to the same people that want to convert everyone to their faith.
To "save" people from what they see as a life of delusion dedicated to an imaginary deity.
In order to point out hypocrisies that are only visible to others outside of the faith.
Perhaps making people of faith realize that they, the dissenters, are real genuine people also, not evil, but only of a different mind.

Listening to dissenting voices may actually be as valuable to you or more in growing in your own own faith than merely discussing topics within the faith. You don't learn by listening only to people who always agree with you.

And to tell people like John Winston not to be so damned patronizing. Notice the 'thumbs down' that he has received, it should tell you how well his remarks were recieved.

to start with this is open to any religion and any spirituality. And one of the arguments that Christians use on atheist is that Atheism is a religion since it requires faith not to believe in a god so by their own definition it would fit.

We don't really want to argue with you, because most of the time, it's pointless. How do you logically defeat someone who throws logic out the window and believes in fairy tales?

We're here to try to save the world from the likes of you. Religion has caused the majority of the world's wars and is one of the biggest causes of discord and strife.

why do you come into the religious section and post questions about atheists coming in here to argue with you? and more importantly..why do you respond to an atheists questions when they ask you to prove God's existence? If you believe in god..why do you care if they don't?

Again this question? Really, how many times is it going to be asked?

Anyway... The world is infested by religious principles, which are pushed into everybody's throats. We HAVE to do things, just because the church says so... And you don't want us even to protest? You invade our right to live a life 100% free from religious influence, AND you expect us not even to complain?

No way...
