Some will see skin damage, like lines and wrinkles. Some will see burns. Yes it's important. If you dont want to wear gloves then apply vaseline on your hands before applying the relaxer to your hair.

The reason that you are told to wear gloves, is because the pH of relaxer is 7-9, and your skin on your hands and scalp are 4.5-5.5. Chemical burns are horribly painful, and scar. Depending on the relaxer you are using..... stop by the store and pick up a box of relaxer, then stop off and pick up a bottle of Drano. Now look at the ingredients. See anything in common, Sodium Hydroxide? Yes...that is Lye. It's the main or only ingredient in both. That, is why you wear gloves. Be afraid!

There are some pretty nasty toxins and chemicals in relaxers. They can get into your skin and you could have a bad reaction, or worse yet, you might rub your eye and the chemicals would go into your eye and possibly blind you. That's dangerous stuff!

Here is some information for you:

They tell you to wear gloves because the chemicals are too harsh for your skin and can cause severe irritaion or even cause skin to peel off. How hard it it to put them on?
