Many times, when someone is depressed they do not realized it at the time. Nor do they think it is obvious.
I think the best approach is to let him know that you have noticed a change in him and reassure him that you are there for him if he needs to talk. He may be withdrawing because he may feel like it is his issue and he does not want to put his problems on anyone else.
Let him know that you care, you are concerned because you love him as a friend. But if he opens up let him tell you what is going on, but focus on solutions. A pitty party is not going to help. Most people stay depressed because they dwell on the issue and not the solution. You have to be an ear but at the same time guide him to a solution. I said "guide him" because ultimately he has to SEE it for himself.
I recommend this book: The Happiness Solution: Finding Joy And Meaning In An Upside Down World

Has he spoken to his parents or a doctor? Has he been diagnosed with depression? I know it's really hard being in both places (the friend and the depressed person). I think if he's getting help, he'll talk to you when he's ready. And if he isn't getting help, you may want to alert his parents, or a teacher--anything. I don't know your age, etc. So hopefully this helps.

Do not talk about being depressed per say...just engage him in a normal conversation in a relaxed atmosphere...and perhaps he may even start to open up to you.
You may even want to open up to him about some things you have experienced in your life that made you feel sad or depressed. Sometimes that gets the ball rolling also...
You are a good friend.

Always be willing to listen to his problems, let him know you will do your best to help. Try to get him out of the house, most people depressed lock themselves away. Go do something fun to distract his stress. Make him feel important and that he is loved and cared for.

I think you should find him and take him to somewhere where there is absolutely no interuptiion and get something to drink pull out the plugs from your phone etc etc and then you ask him what his problems are and then suggest that he see a phycologist if needed........oh and don't give any advice unless he asks for it maybe he needs a good ear

Just spend silent time with him he will slowly open up up. If that doesn't help, try to convince him to seek professional help. Depression can be life threatening.

He needs to see a doctor. Trust me, if he's severely depressed, there's no cheering him up without meds.
I know because my daughter is bipolar.
