Okay, Leviticus...
Leviticus has very little to do with Christian. Leviticus is the law of the Levites. The Levites were the people that carried the second draft of the ten commandments around. This was during Mosses's time and a little afterward. Christ didn't show up until much later.

The Levites were fanatics. the believed that they must live under very strict law in order to be worthy of their assign lot in life. Now understand that none of the rules handed to them were from God, barring the original ten commandments.

As for is " God against abortion " and the comment about " the clump of cells " you have to find out when a clump of cells become a life. Technically, we are all just clumps of cells. But how many cells defines the difference between " abortion " and " murder "?
When you figure that out, you'll know when it's a sin.
As for me? I use the brain wave rule. If a human has brainwaves, it's murder.
best of luck with this.

No, it's not OK to kill a child for cussing, and this is not what Lev. 20:9 is talking about. I'd like to tell you about cursing in the Ancient Near East--not sure if I will get to the abortion part of your question, but I'll try!

A better translation of the word cursing might be "vile intention" or "despicable, unspeakable intention." It was equated to the crime of sorcery, which was also a capital offense.

You may be interested to know that it is not just Biblical law that regards cursing and sorcery as a capital offenses--other neighboring Ancient Near Eastern societies also had legal codes that prescribe capital punishment for cursing, among them the Hittites, the Code of Hammurabi, Middle Assyrian law and the Sumerians. In the ancient world, sorcery and its cousin cursing (not our modern understanding of "cursing") were considered highly destructive of society --and in a sort of new age quantuum physics sort of way, this actually makes some sense.

But did these ancient societies actually execute violators? Most scholars feel that they did not -- the laws were written as a vision of an ideal utopian society and that these legal codes were not enforced. Interestingly, the punishments for murder were surprisingly less stringent, which adds some creedence to the idea that the legal codes were not as harsh as they appear to be.

So here is a segue perhaps into abortion. The Bible does not mention it at all --and in Israelite society it may not have occurred all that often--families had a patriotic commitment to build the nation by having children and there was an ethic to "Choose Life" --meaning to live fully and follow ways that led to flourishing of body and soul. That said, the scriptures do contain references to suicides, without any moral commentary accompanying these sections.

My opinion is that the Bible would not say that abortion is wrong, but it's hard to say for certain.

I think, however, that abortion would be seen in light of social justice--by this I mean that the question is not whether it is OK for a woman to have an abortion, but rather, what has failed in society such that a woman is faced with having to make this choice --who should be standing with her? who should be helping her? who should be responsible? how can we make this a safer world for all women and children?

For your information, cursing had a different meaning in Biblical times. Cursing was not just "cussing", as you say, but literally speaking against your parents. Also, if you were to look at the rest of Leviticus, there are plenty of other offenses that seem very obscene to us today, such as committing adultery(death). Basically, the "wages of sin is death".

The Old Testament punishments for sin are no longer necessary, because Christ has died for all of them. That is also why Christians no longer need to sacrifice, because Christ is the ultimate sacrifice.

And, just in case you want to say anything else about Leviticus, homosexuality and bestiality are also again mentioned in the New Testament as against God's law.

BTW, a baby is not just "a clump of cells". Even an amoeba, a single-celled organism, is considered life. Once fertilization occurs, that child is alive.

Abortion is (1)any spontaneous expulsion of an embryo or a fetus before it is sufficiently developed to survive (2)any deliberate procedures that removes or induces the expulsion of a living or fetus that is called criminal abortion if done illegally (3) anything immature and incomplete or unsuccessful as a deformed creature a badly developed plan.
Based on those definitions,nr 2 abortion is criminal,so the related mother and her assistants should be punished, because she has intentionally gotten rid of her fetus. But the definition nr 1 and 3 if it is unintentionally done is not a criminal action and can not be punished. It can happen maybe the related mother has a disease. which will threaten her life.
According to Islamic teaching, intentionally abortion is the same with murdering or killing.God in the holy Qur'an spoke that God is against with abortion and the related mother and her assistants will have a great sin.

These are the laws set forth for the Jews in the desert, as they searched for their home. Cursing in biblical times does not mean cussing, it meant literally cursing, as in placing a curse upon.

Since you are keen in searching Scripture to try and discredit Christianity, check out the New Testament which releases us from the law, through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

Yes, God would be anti-abortion--read Psalm 139, it speaks of God knowing us from before the time we are born. Indicating that we are his children from before birth.

And if you are an atheist, why do you spend your time doing this? As an atheist--what a waste of time for you to read, search, study Scripture when you could be doing something productive.

Talk about a loaded question! You should pick something more controversial to ask! :)

The word "abortion" does not appear in the bible.

The quote from Leviticus is as other people here have said: It's Old Testament, and was meant for the ancient nation of Israel. Things are different today thanks to Christ Jesus.

You're not going to get any simple answers on this one. Here are some links to some good points to consider. Remember to ALWAYS use the bible as a reference to God's will when you're looking for answers:

Personally, I'd like to err on the side of compassion for life. God is very clear about compassion for others and respect for life. Good luck in your search!

Let me give you an analogy here. You are taking one verse and one verse only as your basis without reading the context or understanding a key concept here.

That verse is old testament and is superceded by the law of Christ which nullifies verses like Leviticus 20:9.

Here's my analogy: I go to a cookbook to find out how to fry eggs sunny side up and find a recipe for scrambling eggs. Does that mean that the cookbook contradicts itself? Does that mean that the cookbook is worthless? Why not? Because the situation and circumstances are totally different. The same goes for the Bible.

Basing whether God is just or not based on a verse isolated by itself is totally irrelevant if it is not backed up by other areas.

Numbers 31:17 , Hosea 13:sixteen , 2 Kings 15:sixteen is conversing approximately wars against different countries and in case you have been to envision the bible and do your study on the classic Hebrews you will possibly come to make certain that Yahweh grow to be a tribal god that supported only the Israelites his chosen human beings and not the international.

What translation are you using, I cannot find one that says any child, they all say any one.

Regardless, this verse has nothing to do with abortion at all. But God is clearly against abortion.

Exodus 21 (NASB)
22"If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide.
23"But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life,

Under the Levitical Law, a child that cursed his parents was rebellious, and it would grow up to be wicked. It was a different culture then, Jews don't do that now.

But for an innocent child? I think these scriptures are very telling:
(The greatest judgment will be upon those that are paid to perform an abortion.)
