My oldest sister has five girls, I never bought them birthday gifts, except for my godchild. My youngest sister now has a new baby boy with an upcoming first birthday. My youngest sister always bought my son birthday gifts, however she does not buy birthday gifts for my step-daughters. Do I buy my nephew a birthday gift? Or do I stay with my status quo, no birthday gifts?

Do you what you want to do. Do what you think is right and what pleases you. Never do something just because you feel you ought to do it, because someone else does it, or it is some kind of a payback - do it just because

You buy your nieces or nephews gifts because you love them, not because their parents gave your children's gift. She doesn't have to buy your step-daughter gift, after all she is YOUR step-daughter, not your sister's.

I wouldn't buy anything just go to the party and offer to help set / clean up. Which you would probably end up doing anyway.
