Before cold medicines existed...we were given "hot toddies"
It consisted of hot water, whiskey and sugar. What is really did was provide soothing attention from our parents and a good night's sleep from the alcohol. Now when I have a bad cold I occasionally make one if I have no cold medicine in the house.

As for the recipe with the BOILING HOT water... you should not drink BOILING HOT water!!!!!!!!!! Let it cool down.
The alcohol only provides a warming effect. Nothing in this recipe is a cure for cold/flu etc. It simply like drinking a cup of hot cocoa.
Save your money and time and get some good ole vitamin C, get lots of sleep and rest.

It is called a "Hot Toddy", and the first person who answered got all the ingredients.
All it is used for is to soothe the SYMPTOMS, not CURE the cold.
Colds are viral, and the best remedy for that is rest and liquids.

My mom use to make us whiskey, sugar and hot water, even when we were young. In moderation of course. I don't know if it helped the cold or not, but it warmed us to the bone, and we slept all night. We did feel better in the morning.

In that order: Take a hot bath, then brew a cup of tea and add Rum, drink it while hot and go to bed immediately. You will sweat (that's the point).....and the next morning you feel better.

There's a fine line between a remedy and getting so drunk you don't give a rat's ***.
