I recently adopted a dog from a local shelter and they gave me a big box of food - no labels or anything. After it ran out I changed him over to pedigree and he has had nothing but runny poop since. I contacted the shelter and they said that they get food donated all the time and have no way of knowing what it was that we were given. They were little round, flat bits of food. They were very compact... I mean that there was not much dust at the bottom of the bag. That leads me to believe it was a good brand of food such as Science Diet. I would run out to the vets to see what Science Diet looks like, but the vet is a money grubbing pig and would probably charge me $55 for an office visit!

I have never used Science Diet to me its a expensive brand of dog food that you pay for just for the name of it. I have never had any of my dogs on that just purina or something like that and they have all been fine .
anytime you change dog foods the dog will get runny poop for awhile till their bodies get use to it. Once he gets use to it and you stay with the brand you like you will be okay .
Expensive brands are not always the best way to go and Science Diet is not a cheap brand of food to buy

Iams can look like little or large chunks of brown, compacted, substenance.Science diet looks pretty much the same. I will tell you that it is common for a dog to have runny stools if you suddenly change foods. Purina isn't a terrible food and neither is Science Diet, but there are better quality foods out on the market. Biggest thing to look for however, regardless of how much you want to spend, is that AT LEAST the first ingredient of the food is some sort of protein such as chicken, lamb, beef, or fish. Iams and Science Diet each have 2 formulas are follow this advice but not all their formulas do. If you are willing to spend the money, there are better quality foods out there but can sometimes be harder to find. Foods such as Natural Balance, Canidae, Royal Canin, and Wellness are in teh top 9 dog foods regardless of what formula you choose. There are some other good ones but these are the easier ones to find. YOu have to go to a real petstore however and not a supermarket or walmart or any thing like that. Petco carries Natural Balance, Royal Canin and Wellness in practically all their stores. Pet Supermarket carries Wellness and Nutro and sometimes Canidae. Again, price is higher than those you find at supermarkets or walmarts but honestly, you get what you pay for.

I agree with what Jen said. I have yet to find a Vet that doesn't recommend Science Diet. In my city we have at least 7 Veterinarian Practices (and that doesn't include all the surrounding cities) and at least 2 vets in each practice. But, I know of one practice that has about 6 Vets. Then in surrounding cities at least another 5-7 practices. I have also been to out of state clinics. And our emergency clinic as lots of vets that switch off on holidays. So of at least 20 vets more like 30 *every* single one of them recommends Science Diet. If I wouldn't go to a Vet that sold Science Diet my dogs wouldn't have a Vet. With that being said, the current Vet we are taking our dogs to. Is a really good Vet, and I trust him completely, He knows what he is doing, he's been around for a long time, he doesn't have any complaints, and he doesn't push Science Diet, and he is really good with my dogs. Honestly I just don't think very many Vets know about nutrition. And the very little training in school they do get is sponsored by pet food comanines like SD. So I would look at more stuff like: How long have they been around? Any complaints? Etc. Stuff like what Jen said. Then what brand of food they sell. Hope I Helped! And Good Luck finding a good Vet!

science diet comes in a white bag and the name is in blue. it is costly but its all i buy my dog. it helps so much with his coat and digestive track. it someitmes takes a dog a while to get used to a new brand of food. if you want to go cheap just stick with one brand and dont change it. the only thing i can think of being flat is kibbles and bits.
