It's important to have some fat in our diet because fat helps the body absorb some vitamins, it's a good source of energy and a source of the essential fatty acids that the body can't make itself.

Also, fat carries flavor which is obvious if you've ever eaten a fat-free variety of something that usually has fat in it. Just be sure to have the right type and amount of fat because too much can be counter productive and use more energy than it gives.

There are some vitamins that are fat soluble and fat is also for insulation. It is necessary for basic survival. The body will even use it for fuel, especially in extreme cases. Unsaturated fat is the preferred means of fat in the diet, as saturated fat is potentially very harmful because those foods are also high in cholesterol.

The body uses fat for many things that we need for our body to function well. Most of us put ourselves on low fat diets to loose weight, especially unwanted fatty tissue. The fat we have in our body is not limited to the excess we see in the mirror. There is a store of fat around our vital organs that protects them if we have a sudden impact to our body, losing that fatty cushion is very dangerous to our bodies. This is why Doctors don't want us to loose too much fat.
