I was hurt 5 months ago and doctors finally got around to doing a MRI of my wrist. Thsi is what is read : "Slight increase signal in the region of the scaphold-lunate ligament probably to inflammatory changes with small amount of fluid. No evidence of tear". What does this mean in laymen terms ? And, what is the scaphold-lunate ligament and what does it do ? How can this be fixed or will it resolve on its own ? My doctor was not very helpful and referred me to an Orthopedic, which I have to wait two more months to see. Any help, will be appreciated. Thank you.

The scaphoid and the lunate are two of the eight bones in the wrist. The ligament connecting these 2 is called the scapholunate ligament. It is important in stability of the wrist. By the wording on the report, it sounds like the radiologist was hedging his bets a little bit (the wrist MR is difficult to interpret well). The most sensitive way to diagnose this is with an arthrogram (which is where dye is injected into the wrist joint, and usually followed by an MRI.). Immobilize your wrist and see the ortho doc.

The "no evidence of tear" is the most significant part. This means that your injury doesn't require surgery. Most likely you will need to immobilize the wrist for a while by wearing a splint. Fluid buildup indicates inflammation from continued use. All in all this isn't an abnormal MRI. Not to say that you don't have an injury, simply that is treatable and not permanent. DOn't use the wrist. Get a wrist brace at a surgical supply shop and keep you appointment with the orthopedist. The less you use the wrist, the sooner it will heal.

Best wishes.
