First, graduate from highschool.

Second, go to college (minimum = 4 years). You really can major in anything. This is your best chance to make sure you're well rounded. Take classes that you find interesting. In order to get into most U.S. medical schools you need to at least have the following classes - biology, general chemisty, organic chemisty, general physics, calculus. The better your grade point average, the better chance you have of getting into medical school.

Do research while in college if you can.

During you junior/senior year of college, take the MCAT (medical college admission test) - different schools will have different requirements for your score, but generally a minimum of 27 is needed. It will test you in three different areas - verbal reasoning, biological sciences, physical sciences.

Apply to medical school junior/senior year in college. Get accepted in the fall/winter of your senior year.

Graduate college with a bachelor of science or of arts degree.

Go to medical school for 4 years (what classes you take are already decided for you).

During your fourth year of medical school, apply to residency. (post-graduate training, like an apprenticeship)

Graduate medical school with a medical doctorate (M.D.) or a doctorate of osteopathy (D.O) degree. -- Congrats! You're a doctor!

Go to residency - minimum of 3 years of training. For surgery, it is a minimum of 5 years.

Just to sum it up - 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, 3+ years of residency - hope you like deferred gratification. Good luck!
