The tire was overinflated to provide pneumatic pressure for the windshield washer. It has a low pressure cutoff valve to keep the driver from using it until the spare was too underinflated to use in case of a flat.

the washer bottle on newer old bugs for the bugs on the wind screen.. the Brit's and some dodges used a black rubber bulb on the floor it would freeze in the winter and made it a good thermometer.ha ha.

The S.T. was used to power the vehicle to the local service station, yes, they had them in those days. It would get u to the station so you could ask the guts to change the stale air in the tires & get new air so you could get better mileage & the car would float better.
