It is a felony in Mexico to jump the border illegally. Kind of ironic don't you think?

1. There is a difference between slapping drug pushers into jail and putting an undocumented alien in jail.
2. Who would want to go to Mexico? When I lived for a year near the Mexican border I went across several times. Nobody forced me to. In fact I enjoyed the South of the border more than where I was living at the time.
3. Punishments written into Mexican law are probably no harsher than what is written into US law. However I think in most cases those punishments are not applied if no other felony is involved.
4. Even if harsh punishments are applied - the USA claims to be better than other countries, doesn't it? Why would the US government feel they had to model itself on Mexican laws or any other laws? I would think American citizensx would be concerned about American laws, and not laws of other countries.
5. I would not recommend going into any country illegally. However if that became, for any reason, the only way you and your family could survive, then - forget the law!

A 13-year sentence—with no chance of parole—was not uncommon for a first offender. "Operation...

Of course they would!

And if they marched in the streets, even if they were there legally, they would be arrested. It is illegal for foreigners to do that there, as our embassy quickly reminded Americans in Mexico during the marches for Obrador.

The embassy was concerned that if US citizens went to Mexico City on the wrong day, they might SEEM to be involving themselves in political action, which would be illegal for them to do.

Uhm, probably not, since of all the times that I have traveled to Mexico, the only times we are checked is when passing back to the US, when going to Mexico, they don't care, cheap American's do it all the time so they don't have to pay a small fee for it.

It is a felony to do that in Mexico. They would be imprisoned and deported after they are released.
