Im interested in joining the national guard.....now, my question is this....is going overseas (ie, iraq, afghan) voulentary or mandatory?.....I know for instance if your unit is called up, you have to go but, what are the chances?.....im not tryin to be smart or ignorant I just wanna know the facts before I jump into it....I know the recrutier will tell me what I want to hear so, if someone can please help me I would appreciate it....

I'm also interested in the national guard........i think it depends on what your job will be and what unit you are assigned to....they rotate units in and out of the country to rotate the troops around so that no one is gone for too long.....that is my understanding...but i'm not in there yet....i sure someone else will chime in with more info than me.....good luck and god bless!

A friend of mine is in the Naval Reserves, and she is on her third activation since 9/11, once to Cuba, once to England, and now to Quwait. She is in a critical skill, so that probably contributes.

The way the Army is transitioning is this: Active duty will go once every three years.
Reserve and Guard components are going to go once every five years if we keep up the pace we're on.

I don't know Justin. The people I know are only home 6 to 9 months before going back.

You can almost expect to be over there within the first yr in the military after that I would go with the first answer you got on here...

Why join if you don't want to participate , if you just want a uniform join a civil war re inaction group !

Your chances are pretty good. Do not join if you don't want to be deployed. Because chances are, it will happen.
