The bird's nose, known as the Cere,is the way to tell the difference. A Male's Cere will be dark blue or purple.A female's Cere will be light blue, pink,or tan-pink,or a combination of those colors. You need to wait till the bird is around 6 months old to really figure out its gender.
You need to go out and buy a pet care manual on your birds so you have this information as well as other important information at hand, always. Also try getting Bird Talk magazine.

The cere in a male is dark blue, in a female it can be pinkish or brown. Very young females can have a light blue cere but then change to pink or brown later.

A young parakeet will have a light purple nose (CERE) and will have stripes on its forhead, the grown adult birds will have no stripes on their forhead and the male will have a BLUE CERE and the female will have a babyblue WHITE or Brown CERE. Cere means Nose.

All your answers were for Budgies, if your parakeet is mature enuff feel the VENT (its bum) the two bones that join together at this point determines the sex M/F. If there is a gap it is female to allow eggs through if no gap its a boy.

Next to impossible to sex them as juveniles. The area around the nostril (the cere) should turn bluer in the mature male, and a pale brown in the mature female.

It's really hard. Usually you can tell by what color the top of their beak. Males are usually darker with a little bit of whitish circle around the nostril
