This may sound crazy but I have been told that wetting the area with a chlorine bleach solution helps to dry up the areas. However since you haven't tried this before I would call the doctor to see if you could get a Medrol Dose Pack. It's a steroid pack that you take decreasing number of tablets over five days and this should help dry up and heal and remove the terrible itch. Most doctors will take pity on you especially if you are headed on a nice vacation.
