You need water. A protein drink supplement is a food, even though it is a liquid. And any supplement [ie vitamins, herbs etc.] requires lots of water.

Most protein shakes are high in protein (duh) but low in carbs. Drinks with carbs and electrolytes quench thirsts.

That being said, I find that protein shakes with at least 20g of carbs leave you less thirsty than those depleted of carbs.
