I have never painted molding and ceiling the same . I've always painted my molding the same as the walls (unless molding was to be natural) but do paint your ceiling but not white. If you have small room use a lighter color or a color to compliment the you pick for your room. If your room is larger you can go darker for your ceiling.

Are you painting the walls the same as the ceiling and molding ? If yes then your room will look lower. If the ceiling and molding are lighter than your walls then it will look higher.

It makes the ceiling look lower. Usually moldings look great painted a shade of white that coordinates with your colors. If you have a colonial or victorian look, you can go almost tan or dark beige.

It would depend on the color you are using...something really light or white colors will give the illusion of space, and darker colors will make the room appear smaller overall...but as far as just the ceiling, I would think the same would apply.
