Sounds like she has an ear infection either from mites or water in the ear canal. If there is black stuff that comes out when you clean them with a q-tip then it is mites. In either case it is important that you take her to a vet to get an antibiotic.

Neosporin or an antibiotic ointment.
Some Cort-aid (cortizone cream) may relieve the itching.
Get something like an arthritis medication for older dogs - something for pain relief.

Enteric coated aspirin if you can figure it by weight.

Could be sarcoptic mange.
Get some Hartz Flea and Tick power and put it on.
Best stuff for mange I've tried.
If it's not, well - it won't hurt anything,,,

Is she outside much? Some dogs for some reason just about get their ears eaten off by flys. You can get some ointment to keep them away from the pet shop, but you might as well wait until you've seen the vet and find out what it is.

It's unlikely you will be able to give her any real help before you get her to the vet. Do check for any mites, fleas, etc. since they may be the cause. You can also rub her ears to see if they are painful. Smell her ears--it they're really foul she may have a fungal or bacterial infection, and you might be able to find some sort of drops that will relieve the pain. She may also have foreign objects in her ears--something like foxtails that go in then spread out so the natural mechanisms cannot expel them. If you look in them and see a foreign object you could carefully try to extract it but beware of using inserting anything, including a cotton swab further than you can actually see.

There could be something in the ear that is making it irritated. It could be the sign of an allergy. It could be a fungus. No matter what is causing this it is best to just leave it alone and try to prevent her from scratching it so much until you have had a chance to see the vet. If you use something in the ear you might be doing something that could make the condition worse. That could be a disaster!

Get some ear cleaner and some cotton pads to clean your dog's ears. I would also get something like neosporin for the sores the dog scratched open. An E-ring collar would also be a good thing to get so that the wounds will heal. But definitely bring her to see your vet.

If it is only 1 ear it is likly an ear infection. Most ear infections are caused by yeast growing in her ears. You can get some cream for athleds foot(antifungle cream) and put a small amount in her ear. My cocker spainel suffers from cronic ear infections and is on an atibiotic antifungle cream and I ran out on weekend and called the vet and they told me to use the other stuff. If you have a cone handy put it on her to stop her from scratching.

Look in her ears , if they look dirty, take a paper towel and put rubbing alcihol on it ( make sure you keep it away from the eyes) and take your little finger and clean her ears out about every other day till they look clean and when needed after that. ( push a small portion of the paper towel in with your little finger and rub it around and pull the paper towel out ) If they are red then take her to vet the will give you drops to put in her ears for infection. Any thing else I would take her to vet,

Check for fleas, ticks, and ear mites. Those are the most common reasons why she might be scratching. You'll probably have to wash the dog with a special shampoo and make her wear a flea collar.

she has ear mites, look in the ear to see if there is this brown/black stuff in it. there is over the counter ear cleaner you can put in her ear, but don't put q-tips in it to clean the ear out. get her to the vet as soon as you can/ it will only get worse
