My 13 month old son won't drink anything signifigant from a cup. He drinks from it, but only an ounce or two. He won't drink milk or formula from a bottle - per dr. advise I added a scoop of Ovaltine to milk and he will drink 16 or so ounces a day but only from a bottle. Should I take away bottle completely and only give cup then he will have to drink eventually?

When my kids turned 1yr. I gave them sippy cups only during the day. At night before bed I would give them milk in a bottle. Then after a lil while when there used to the sippy cup I just took the bottle away completly.
To help the learn better with an open cup I would just put a few drops of water in a cup and help teach them. Give the baby the cup... let him have fun... they pick it up eventually.
Straws help too.. its fun for them.
My daughter is 2 and I almost always just use a sippy cup ... dont wanna deal with the mess anyway. The BEST sippy cups are Gerber color change cups ... they dont leak and are easy to drink from.

tell him that there are other children who need the bottles and put all the bottles in a bag for the bottle fairy. when he goes to bed put them where he can't find them and leave him a treat. if he asks for a bottle just remind him that the bottle fairy took them, he will get the hang of drinking from the cup.

You've gotta take away the bottle and let him scream. He'll get thirsty eventually and drink from a cup. From there he'll do fine- you've just gotta get that bottle out of the picture. And he's not going to be happy.

Why does he need to drink from a cup at this age?

He's only existed for one year. There is no need to accelerate everything. So many things are easier on kids and parents if you wait a little. Why stress him if he finds it tricky to use a cup? Too young!

You can get sippie cups that start with a nipple like the bottle and then change to the sippie attachment - so he gets used to the cup with the nipple and then you just change it - tell him only babies use those, and he is a big boy.

Once he gets the idea, and it will be his idea, you should have no problems

try takeing him to the store and letting him pick out his own cup, it may sound silly but u may be surprised of the difference it could make. Picking it out lets him know that this cup is HIS and may encourage him to drink from it more often

Straws.
They still get the sucking motion, but feel more "big kid" because it's not in a bottle!

This was a suggestion from my daughter's pediatrician at her 1 year check up...and it worked beter than I ever imagined!

If you don't take away the bottle he'll never take the cup at this point.
