shallow... a sprinter...able to meet people on an introductory level and maintain trivial conversation but totally inadequate when pressed to maintain a conversation beyond that first impression. The person either sees him/herself as too far above others to come down to their level or is so clueless that he/she cannot follow so he just pretends he's not interested. Chances are if you family really got to know this person, they'd puke. Sorry, but I think I was married to him for 20 years.

This person might be depressed. When around people, they put on a defensive front to ease the anxiety of interaction. When around family, too tired to put on front and more comfortable to behave the way they really feel....maybe??
