It depends on what type of liquor you are talking about.

For instance, wine comes from grapes. Vodka comes from potatoes. Tequila comes from the agave plant.

However, all alcohol has one key element - fermentation. That is what makes the juice of these various sources be more potent than what you can get in a juice box.

Basics: (Think of it like making coffee; water + beans = coffee)
Grape Juice + Yeast = Wine
Grain + Water (boiled together first)+ yeast + hops = beer
Beer and wine are FERMENTED to make an alcohol - no stronger than 14% by volume

For LIQUOR you need a fermented batch of SOMETHING (remember the coffee example) then DISTILL it. The alcohol mixture gets boiled and the vapor is captured in a STILL.

Again, these are basics:
Distilled Wine = Brandy
Distilled Agave Juice = Tequila
Distilled Wine + a whole bunch of aging = Cognac
Distilled Grain (Typically Corn) + aging = Whiskey
Distilled Potato Juice = Vodka
Distilled Junier Berry plus "aromatics" = Gin
Distilled Cane Sugar = Rum

For the most part, lightness or darkness of a distilled spirit comes from the length of aging or the type of receptacle in which it was aged. Most liquors get their coloring and distinctness of flavors by being aged in oak barrels.

Whiskey comed from grain...barley, corn, oats, rye, wheat...any starchy grain.
Vodka is mostly from grain, though there are varieties that are made with potatos. The difference is that it's distilled more times than whiskey to remove any flavors.
Brandy is distilled wine (grapes).
Tequila is distilled from fermented agave plant juice.
Rum is from fermented sugar cane/molasses
