In the case of verbs- a transitive verb transfers the action from the subject to a direct object. As in the sentence "I gave the book" The book is being given, so it's the direct object- it is recieving the act of giving.
An intransitive verb does not do this- there is no direct object to recieve the action. " I ran" is one example. The verb forms of "to be"- I am, you are, he/she/it is, we are, you (all) are, they are- are always intransitive verbs.
